Yumbe, Uganda: A 44-year-old Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) died from head injuries sustained in a fatal crash after he lost control of his motorcycle on Yumbe-Kuru road on Friday evening, police have confirmed.
The deceased, AIP Egwuyu Wilfred, attached to Arua City Police Health Centre III and a student at Arua Institute of Health Sciences, was involved in the accident on Friday evening, April 17, 2026.
According to West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SP Collins Asea, the crash occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. in Manduru Cell, Ombe Ward, Kuru Town Council.
Preliminary police findings indicate that Egwuyu was riding a white Yamaha motorcycle (registration UEM 378W) from Yumbe Town towards Kuru Hospital when he lost control.
Investigations suggest the motorcycle’s side stand had not been properly folded and struck the ground, destabilizing the bike and causing it to overturn.
“The deceased sustained a serious head injury and lost consciousness. He was rushed to Kuru Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival,” SP Asea said.

The rider’s passenger, Ambayo Geoffrey, 34, also a student at Arua Institute of Health Sciences, sustained injuries but is reported to be in stable condition after receiving treatment.
Traffic officers led by CLO Arua City IP Matua visited the scene, documented evidence, and recorded statements from witnesses and medical personnel.
A postmortem examination was conducted by Regional Police Surgeon SSP Madrama Charles before the body was transferred to Arua City.
The motorcycle has since been recovered and is parked at Kuru Police Station pending mechanical inspection. The case has been registered as TAR 018/2026.
The incident adds to growing concern over motorcycle-related fatalities in Uganda, where boda boda riders and passengers remain among the most vulnerable road users.
According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2025, the country recorded 26,044 road crashes, a 3.7% increase from 25,107 cases in 2024, with human error and mechanical negligence cited among leading causes.
