Kamuli, Uganda: The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kamuli, Rose Birungi, has urged newly trained nurses to embrace patriotism and professionalism as core values in their service to the nation.

Birungi made the call on Tuesday, April 21, during the pass-out of 120 nurses at St Joseph Kamuli School of Nursing and Midwifery, who had completed a one-week patriotism training programme.

“As nurses, you will be serving the nation and its people, so it is crucial that you embody the values of patriotism and professionalism,” Birungi said.

She emphasised discipline, responsibility, and commitment to duty, urging the nurses to become role models within their communities. “We need you to be role models. Keep the norms of your country, love yourselves, and be disciplined in all that you do.”

Birungi also used the platform to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS, encouraging the trainees to adopt responsible lifestyles and safeguard their health as frontline workers.

The Principal, Regina Atimo, commended government for introducing patriotism training in higher institutions, noting its positive impact on discipline and civic responsibility. “The patriotism training has improved discipline and built good citizens,” she said.

Assistant RDC Museebe Michael, who attended the event, echoed similar sentiments, praising the RDC’s message as timely and impactful.

“We hope the patriots will take her words to heart and make a positive impact in their communities,” he said.

Officials said the initiative is part of broader government efforts to instill national values among professionals, particularly in critical sectors such as healthcare.

The training is expected to enhance service delivery by fostering accountability, ethical conduct, and a strong sense of national duty among health workers.
