Mbale City, Uganda: Bukasakya Health Centre IV in Mbale City has recorded 19 successful Caesarean section (C-section) deliveries within a month, earning praise from the community and local leaders for improved maternal health services.
The milestone was confirmed by the Health Unit Management Committee (HUMIC) chairperson Steven Masiga, who commended the facility’s staff for what he described as “excellent service delivery across all health dimensions.”
Masiga said the surgeries, all conducted successfully, resulted in healthy deliveries and reflect growing capacity at the facility following its recent upgrade.
“Last month alone, the team carried out 19 successful C-section operations, all with positive outcomes. This is a big achievement for our community,” Masiga told DailyExpress in a telephone interview.
He particularly credited the facility’s new in-charge, Dr Tom Namonyo, for strengthening maternal healthcare services since his deployment.
“Dr Namonyo arrived with energy and immediately assessed the needs in gynaecology and antenatal care. His quick action and leadership have made a difference. Without this intervention, the results could have been different,” Masiga said.
Bukasakya Health Centre IV was recently elevated from a lower-level facility to a Health Centre IV, enabling it to provide advanced services including surgical procedures such as C-sections.

Masiga also applauded Mbale City leadership for supporting the facility through staffing and supervision.
“On behalf of HUMIC, we thank the Town Clerk, the Mayor of Industrial Division Hon. Muhamood Masaba, and the City Health Officer Dr Mugonya for their continued support, including deployment of staff and routine supervision,” he noted.
The facility’s upgrade was partly supported by donations from Spotlight Africa, which provided critical equipment, including a theatre machine, a key requirement for Health Centre IV status.
Masiga further acknowledged the Government of Uganda for consistent drug supplies and partners for ongoing support that has strengthened service delivery.
The improved services have been welcomed by residents, who say access to emergency maternal healthcare has significantly improved.
Previously, expectant mothers requiring surgical delivery had to travel long distances to referral hospitals, often risking delays and complications.
Local leaders say the facility’s performance demonstrates the impact of investing in lower-level health centres to decongest major hospitals and bring services closer to communities.
Masiga also revealed that discussions are ongoing about renaming the facility to reflect its location within Industrial Division, following administrative changes that merged Bukasakya Sub-county into Mbale City.
