Kampala, Uganda: Midfielder Shamim Nalukwago has expressed excitement and determination after earning her first call-up to the Uganda U-20 Women’s National Team ahead of crucial FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers against Ghana.

Nalukwago, who plies his trade at Standard Secondary School, Zzana, described the opportunity as a major milestone in her football journey, saying she is already adapting well to life in the national team camp.

“I am honoured to be part of this team for the first time. The experience has been very positive. I have met very talented, disciplined and focused players who are helping me adapt quickly and improve every day,” she said.

The rising star midfielder noted that the competitive environment within the squad is pushing players to raise their performance levels. “I am learning a lot from both the coaches and my teammates, and the competition within the group is pushing everyone to improve.”

The team is currently in residential training at the FUFA Technical Centre Njeru as preparations intensify for the final qualification round.

Nalukwago described the training sessions as demanding but necessary. “The sessions have been intense but very productive. We understand the importance of the matches against Ghana, and we are preparing mentally and physically to give our best,” she said.

Uganda will face Ghana in a two-legged tie, with the first leg scheduled for May 3, 2026, in Accra, before the return leg in Kampala on May 9. The aggregate winner will secure a place at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2026.

The provisional squad blends experienced players with emerging talents, including several promoted from the U-17 side that recently impressed on the continental stage.

With only four African slots available at the global tournament, competition remains intense, with traditional powerhouses also battling for qualification.

For Nalukwago, however, the focus remains clear—make an impact and help Uganda achieve a historic qualification.
