Dubai, UAE: Emirates has introduced next-generation onboard internet on its flagship Airbus A380, becoming the first airline to equip the world’s largest passenger aircraft with Starlink connectivity.
The first upgraded A380 returned to Dubai this week after installation and certification in the United Kingdom, marking a major leap in in-flight connectivity technology.
According to Emirates, the new system, powered by three Starlink antennas, offers a dramatic improvement in onboard internet speeds, delivering up to 2 Gbps of total aircraft bandwidth, compared to earlier systems that provided less than 1 Mbps.
The upgrade is expected to allow passengers to stream, browse, game, and work seamlessly at cruising altitude, with the service set to be offered free of charge across all cabin classes.
Emirates said the installation presents a technical milestone given the A380’s double-decker structure and high passenger capacity, requiring enhanced wireless access points and specialised integration to ensure stable connectivity throughout the aircraft.

The airline plans to accelerate rollout of the system across its fleet, with installations set to take place at Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai. So far, 25 Boeing 777 aircraft have already been equipped with Starlink, with more A380s expected to follow throughout 2026.
More than 650,000 passengers have already experienced Starlink-enabled flights on Emirates, according to the airline.
The development forms part of a broader investment strategy aimed at enhancing customer experience, including a large-scale aircraft retrofit programme that has so far upgraded over 90 aircraft with new cabin interiors, premium economy seating, and expanded inflight entertainment systems.
Emirates has also invested in crew training infrastructure, including the launch of a hospitality training centre in 2025 aimed at improving onboard service delivery.
The integration of high-speed satellite internet is expected to intensify competition among global airlines, as carriers race to offer faster and more reliable connectivity to passengers.
