Shock as councillor blocks bridge project after election loss, says voters “deserve to suffer”

Alex Molokoye stunned the council when he openly rejected the planned construction of a standard bridge at Khabutanyi, arguing that since he lost the election, his constituents should not benefit from projects initiated during his tenure.

Namisindwa, Uganda: A councillor in Namisindwa District has sparked outrage after calling for the removal of a UGX 130 million bridge project from his area, saying residents “deserve to suffer” for voting him out of office.

Alex Molokoye, who has represented Bukiabi Sub-county for 10 years, made the remarks during a district council session on Wednesday as leaders debated the 2026/2027 financial year budget.

Molokoye stunned the council when he openly rejected the planned construction of a standard bridge at Khabutanyi, arguing that since he lost the election, his constituents should not benefit from projects initiated during his tenure.

The bridge project had been proposed after a previous UGX 35 million renovation carried out in the 2025/2026 financial year failed, with the structure collapsing just two weeks later, leaving residents stranded and raising serious concerns over quality and oversight.

In response, the district allocated UGX 130 million in the new budget to construct a more durable bridge to improve transport and connectivity in the area.

However, Molokoye insisted the project be redirected elsewhere, triggering strong reactions from fellow leaders.

District Speaker Dorothy Walukawu, who presided over the session, confirmed that the council approved a UGX 47.9 billion budget prioritising sectors such as health, education, production, and infrastructure. She urged leaders to move beyond politics and focus on service delivery.

“The political season is over. This is the time to serve the people,” she emphasized.

Bwayo Emma, the Namisindwa Male Youth Councillor, strongly opposed Molokoye’s position, warning against mixing personal grievances with public service.

“Leadership is about the people, not personal emotions. We must heal and continue delivering services regardless of political outcomes,” he said.

The incident has drawn criticism from residents and leaders alike, with many questioning the ethics of withholding public services based on electoral outcomes.
