Two drown in Bugiri swamp after floods cut off road

Police say the two were travelling on a motorcycle, registration KMFS 904T, when rising floodwaters overwhelmed them on Saturday.

Bugiri, Uganda: Two bodies have been retrieved from Kibimba swamp in Bugiri District following a drowning incident that occurred after floodwaters cut off a key road linking Kapyanga and Buluguyi sub-counties.

The victims have been identified as Constance Nabwire, 9, a Primary Three pupil at Kayango Children’s Kidukiro School, and Franco Bageya, a resident of Sironyo village in Muwayo Town Council.

Police say the two were travelling on a motorcycle, registration KMFS 904T, when rising floodwaters overwhelmed them on Saturday.

According to Michael Kasadha, the motorcycle was initially recovered, but the victims remained missing, prompting an intensive search that later led to the recovery of their bodies from Bufunda-Kayango swamp.

Local leaders have raised alarm over the swamp, describing it as a recurring death trap during heavy rains.

Bufunda Parish councillor Balikoowa Bulungibwansi called for urgent intervention. “Many people are losing their lives from that point. The district must act and fix this road,” he said.

Residents, including Maka Wilber and Mbatya Jamiru, described the area as increasingly dangerous, warning that without rehabilitation, more lives could be lost.

Police attributed the incident to heavy rains that rendered the road impassable and have urged travellers to avoid flooded routes.

Authorities emphasised the need for caution during the rainy season and called for immediate infrastructure improvements to prevent further tragedies.

The latest deaths have intensified pressure on district leaders to address flood-prone roads and improve safety measures in vulnerable areas.
