Kamuli, Uganda: The government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), has distributed 234 goats to residents of Kamuli Municipality in a targeted effort to improve household incomes and promote urban farming.

Each selected beneficiary received three goats, two females and one male, under the programme aimed at strengthening livelihoods through small-scale livestock farming.

Speaking at the distribution event held at the municipal headquarters, Production Officer David Mawerere urged beneficiaries to take proper care of the animals and resist the temptation to sell them.

“Our aim is to help local farmers improve their financial status. Don’t sell them,” Dr. Mawerere emphasised.

He explained that goats were chosen due to their suitability for urban settings, particularly under zero-grazing systems. “We prefer zero grazing in the municipality. Even with small land, these goats can be managed effectively,” he said.

According to Dr. Mawerere, if properly managed, the goats can multiply rapidly, with each beneficiary expected to realise up to 12 offspring within two years—offering a sustainable pathway to income generation.

The initiative aligns with government efforts to transition households from subsistence to market-oriented production, especially in urban and peri-urban areas.

Residents welcomed the intervention, describing it as a timely boost to their livelihoods. “These goats are a big help. We had nothing to look after at home. We thank the government for this support,” said Nabongo Abib, one of the beneficiaries.
