Joy as Oyam South residents get fully equipped ambulance

The ambulance delivery follows months of advocacy by Oyam South MP-elect Patrick Ogwang Obura, who petitioned the Ministry of Health on March 12, 2026, seeking urgent intervention over the area’s shortage of emergency medical transport services.

Oyam, Uganda: Residents of Oyam South in Oyam District can now access improved emergency medical services after the Ministry of Health officially handed over a brand-new fully equipped ambulance to the constituency.

The ambulance delivery follows months of advocacy by Oyam South MP-elect Patrick Ogwang Obura, who petitioned the Ministry of Health on March 12, 2026, seeking urgent intervention over the area’s shortage of emergency medical transport services.

The development has been welcomed by community leaders and residents, many of whom cited years of challenges in accessing timely emergency healthcare.

“This is a dream come true for our community,” said Oyam District LCV Chairperson Benson Dila Oyuku. “For years, our people faced critical delays in accessing emergency care. Today, we have a vehicle that will save lives and strengthen our health services. This is leadership delivering results,” he added.

Residents described the ambulance as a major breakthrough for a district where patients have often struggled to reach health facilities during emergencies.

Mary Acan, a mother of three, said the lack of emergency transport had previously cost lives in the community. “I lost a friend last year because we had no proper transport to the hospital. With this ambulance, families like mine can now have hope in emergencies,” she said.

John Obong, a boda boda rider in the area, noted that the ambulance would significantly improve response to road accidents and medical emergencies. “I have witnessed countless accidents where every minute mattered. This ambulance will make a real difference in saving lives,” he said.

Another resident, Grace Laker, described the vehicle as a lifeline for vulnerable groups, especially elderly residents. “When my husband suffered a stroke, we struggled to get him medical help. This ambulance is a blessing for the elderly and vulnerable in our community,” she said.

Speaking after the handover, Ogwang Obura described the ambulance as more than just a vehicle.

“This ambulance is more than just transport; it is a lifeline for the people of Oyam South. My petition to the Ministry was aimed at ensuring that no life is lost due to lack of timely emergency services. Today, that commitment is realised,” he said.

The MP-elect added that the constituency would continue pushing for additional health resources, trained medical personnel and better-equipped health facilities.

The ambulance is expected to serve communities across Oyam South and reduce delays in emergency referrals to hospitals and health centres.

According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2025, delayed emergency response remains a major factor contributing to preventable deaths arising from road crashes and medical emergencies, particularly in rural districts with limited ambulance coverage.

Community leaders described the ambulance handover as a sign that sustained advocacy and collaboration between leaders and government institutions can deliver tangible results for citizens.
