Iganga, Uganda: Students from different tribes and cultural backgrounds at Lubega Institute of Nursing and Health Professionals gathered on Friday for the institution’s Annual Cultural Gala, an event aimed at promoting cultural identity, discipline and unity among learners.

The colourful gala, held at the institute’s headquarters in Buseyi, brought together students showcasing traditional dances, songs and cultural performances as part of efforts to promote holistic education beyond academics.

Uganda Muslim Supreme Council Chairman and Institute Chief Executive Officer Prof. Dr Muhamadi Lubega Kisambira challenged students to remain proud of their roots even as they pursue professional careers.

“You were something before becoming a nurse or midwife. Always get involved in activities that define you,” Dr Lubega said. “It’s another way to be proud of your culture.”

He explained that the institute deliberately invests heavily in cultural activities to ensure students remain connected to their traditions and heritage.

“We put a lot of money into these competitions because we want students to love their culture and where they come from,” he said. “These galas establish what makes one different from the other.”

Dr Lubega also urged the younger generation to embrace creative expressions that positively promote culture rather than erode societal values.

Building confidence and leadership

Adjudicator Ms Namasaba Martha Isabirye said cultural competitions play an important role in refreshing students’ understanding of their traditions while also improving their confidence and communication skills.

“These competitions refresh students’ minds and build confidence, which strengthens their art of public speaking,” she said. “Singing is another way of promoting one’s culture and makes people want to visit different cultural backgrounds.”

She encouraged other educational institutions across the country to adopt similar cultural initiatives to strengthen identity and social cohesion among young people.

Tutor and event coordinator Mr Magomu Peter commended the administration for consistently funding the annual gala and pledged to continue organizing the event every year.

He said the activities help students appreciate diversity while strengthening their sense of belonging.

Lubega Institute Public Relations Officer Charles Wambi revealed that preparations were underway for the institution’s 6th graduation ceremony scheduled for May 30, 2026, where students will receive certificates and diplomas in various courses.
