Buyende, Uganda: Buyende District leaders led by area Woman Member of Parliament Sarah Namulondo, have called on government to urgently rehabilitate the deteriorating Iyingo-Kamuli road, warning that its poor condition is crippling trade and affecting livelihoods in the region.
Namulondo made the appeal on Tuesday while travelling to Kagulu Sub-county headquarters to attend the swearing-in ceremony of newly elected Kagulu Sub-county Chairperson Ibanda Muhammad.
According to the legislator, the once-busy road has become nearly impassable due to deep potholes, damaged sections, and swampy stretches that continue to disrupt transport and business activities.
“The road is in a deplorable state, with potholes and swampy sections disrupting business activities. We need urgent intervention to revive this key route,” Namulondo said.
The Iyingo-Kamuli road serves as a major transport and trade corridor connecting communities in Buyende and surrounding districts, with residents heavily relying on it for transportation of agricultural produce, access to markets, schools, and health services.
Particularly affected is the Nsomba swamp section, where motorists, traders, and pedestrians reportedly struggle daily to cross due to poor road conditions and flooding.
Residents say the deteriorating road has increased transport costs, delayed movement of goods, and negatively affected local businesses.
Namulondo’s appeal adds to growing pressure on government to prioritize rural infrastructure development in eastern Uganda where several feeder and community roads remain in poor condition despite their economic importance.
In a separate engagement during the same event, the MP also emphasized the importance of integrity, accountability, and unity among newly elected leaders.
While witnessing the swearing-in of Kagulu Sub-county leaders and councillors, Namulondo urged leaders to focus on service delivery and community transformation.
“Leaders must serve with integrity and accountability. I call on all leaders to work together for the betterment of our community,” she said.
The legislator further pledged to work closely with local leaders to improve service delivery and lobby for critical infrastructure projects across Buyende District.
Meanwhile, newly sworn-in Chairperson Ibanda Muhammad appealed for unity among political leaders and technical staff, saying development can only be achieved through cooperation.
“I urge my fellow leaders to get united and deliver to the community. Let’s protect our sub-county and work with technical teams for better service delivery,” Ibanda said.
The swearing-in ceremony attracted local leaders, councillors, residents, and community stakeholders from across Kagulu Sub-county.
As government continues to prioritize infrastructure development under various national programs, residents in Buyende say rehabilitating the Iyingo-Kamuli road would significantly boost trade, transport, and economic activity in the area.
