KAMULI, Uganda: Health workers and Village Health Teams (VHTs) from Kamuli District have completed a two-day training on management and awareness of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus aimed at strengthening early detection, prevention and community sensitization.
The training, which started on Monday, May 25 throught to Tuesday at Kamuli District headquarters, was organized through a collaboration between the Safety and Health Association of Uganda (SHAU) and district health authorities.
Participants were equipped with knowledge and skills on identification, management and referral of children affected by the conditions, as well as community awareness approaches.
Speaking during the training, Kamuli District Health Inspector Abudallah Munyete urged expectant mothers to prioritize antenatal care and proper nutrition during pregnancy.
“Visit health centres immediately after realizing pregnancy and eat a balanced diet rich in proteins and minerals to help the fetus grow well without complications,” Munyete advised.
He also encouraged Village Health Teams to intensify community sensitization on the dangers and prevention of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.
Munyete emphasized that collaborative community efforts remain critical in addressing maternal and child health complications in rural communities.
Meanwhile, SHAU Eastern Region Coordinator Jackie Ahimbisibwe said the organization is working closely with government to strengthen awareness and support systems for affected families.
“We are working closely with the government to sensitize communities on Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and ensure they know where to go for help,” Ahimbisibwe said.
Spina Bifida is a birth defect affecting the spine and nervous system, while Hydrocephalus involves accumulation of fluid in the brain, conditions that often require early medical intervention and long-term support.
Health experts say increased public awareness, proper antenatal care and timely medical attention remain essential in reducing complications associated with the conditions.
