Three-year-old girl dies after alleged assault by father in Tororo

Preliminary investigations indicate that the child allegedly injured her father on the leg with a slasher while he was asleep in a grass-thatched house, which led to serious bleeding, before he allegedly attacked the child in retaliation.

Tororo, Uganda: A three-year-old girl has died after she was allegedly assaulted by her father following a domestic incident in Magola Sub-county, Tororo District, police have said.

The deceased has been identified as Akongo Dorcas, 3, a resident of Paloto A Cell, Magola Parish in Tororo District.

According to Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson, IP Mugwe Johnson Moses, the incident occurred at around 11:00 am on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

Police have arrested Othieno Vincent, 21, a peasant and resident of the same village, in connection with the child’s death.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the child allegedly injured her father on the leg with a slasher while he was asleep in a grass-thatched house, which led to serious bleeding, before he allegedly attacked the child in retaliation.

“The victim was rescued by neighbours and rushed to Tororo General Hospital for treatment, where she later succumbed to her injuries,” Mugwe said.

The matter was reported to Magola Police Station and recorded in the Tororo Criminal Register Book (CRB). Police officers visited and documented the crime scene and recorded statements from witnesses as part of ongoing investigations.

The child’s body was taken to Tororo General Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Police confirmed that the suspect remains in custody pending further investigations and possible prosecution. “We condemn all acts of violence. Once sufficient evidence is gathered, the suspect will be arraigned before court to answer the charges,” IP Mugwe added.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.

According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2025, cases of domestic violence and child abuse remain a significant concern, with authorities repeatedly urging communities to report abuse early and seek intervention before disputes escalate into fatal incidents.
