Christians Urged to Mark Martyrs Day from Home as Ebola Threat Looms

Fr. Kilma said that while pilgrimage to Namugongo remains an important expression of faith for many Christians, the current public health situation requires believers to prioritize safety while maintaining their spiritual devotion.

Rev. Fr. Stephen Raphael Kilma of Holy Rosary Parish in Gulu City addresses Christians during Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations on Tuesday.

Gulu City, Uganda: Christians have been urged to commemorate Uganda Martyrs Day from their respective dioceses, parishes and chapels rather than travelling to Namugongo, as religious leaders call for caution amid the ongoing Ebola outbreak.

The appeal was made by Rev. Fr. Stephen Raphael Kilma of Holy Rosary Parish in Gulu City during Martyrs Day celebrations held at the parish on Tuesday.

Fr. Kilma said that while pilgrimage to Namugongo remains an important expression of faith for many Christians, the current public health situation requires believers to prioritize safety while maintaining their spiritual devotion.

He encouraged Christians to use the occasion to pray for Uganda through the intercession of the Uganda Martyrs, asking God to protect the nation from Ebola and grant citizens strength during the outbreak.

“The Uganda Martyrs remained steadfast in their faith despite persecution and suffering. As we commemorate them today, we should pray for our country and draw inspiration from their courage as we face challenges such as the Ebola outbreak,” Fr. Kilma said.

Faith and Vigilance

Fr. Kilma urged Christians to emulate the virtues of the Uganda Martyrs by remaining faithful, disciplined and committed to righteous living.

He noted that prayer, faith and community solidarity remain important sources of hope during difficult moments.

The priest also highlighted the historical connection between the Archdiocese of Gulu and the Uganda Martyrs, noting that two of the 24 Catholic martyrs hailed from the region.

“We take pride in the witness of the martyrs whose lives continue to inspire generations of Christians. Their example reminds us that with God’s grace, it is possible to remain steadfast even in the face of adversity,” he said.

Low Turnout Reported

Attendance at the Martyrs Day Mass at Holy Rosary Parish was noticeably lower than in previous years, with only a limited number of worshippers participating in the celebrations.

Several faithful attributed the reduced turnout to government guidance discouraging participation in large gatherings following the recent Ebola outbreak.

This year’s national Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo, which were expected to be animated by Kasese Archdiocese, were cancelled by government as part of measures aimed at preventing the spread of the disease.

Martyrs Day Significance

Uganda Martyrs Day is observed annually on June 3 in remembrance of the 45 Christian converts who were executed between 1885 and 1887 for their faith during the reign of Kabaka Mwanga II.

The commemoration is one of the largest religious events in Africa, traditionally attracting millions of pilgrims from Uganda and neighbouring countries to the Namugongo Martyrs Shrines.

This year’s observance comes amid heightened public health vigilance following Uganda’s latest Ebola outbreak.

According to the Ministry of Health, the country has so far registered several confirmed cases linked to the outbreak, with hundreds of contacts under monitoring as authorities intensify surveillance, contact tracing and response measures.

Religious leaders have called upon Christians to remain vigilant, observe health guidelines issued by government and continue praying for healing, protection and an end to the outbreak.
