Mukono, Uganda: Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) East has dismantled a notorious robbery gang known as “Eggaali” that has been terrorising residents of Mukono Municipality and surrounding areas through a series of violent robberies.

According to KMP spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala, the gang had become notorious for attacking members of the public along Kayunga Road, Kusatu, Nasuuti and Wantoni using dangerous weapons including knives, pangas and pavers before robbing them of mobile phones, cash, laptops, bags, wristwatches and other valuables.

The breakthrough followed a string of complaints from residents and victims who reported being targeted by the criminal group, prompting police to launch an intelligence-led operation to identify and arrest those behind the attacks.

One of the key incidents was reported at Mukono Central Police Station on May 25, 2026, under SD Reference No. 04/25/05/2026 after a technician was allegedly attacked and robbed of cash and personal property while returning home.

Following intensive investigations, detectives arrested Muhanguzi Vian, 25, on May 31. During interrogation, police said the suspect admitted participating in a series of robberies and provided information that led investigators to other members of the gang.

Muhanguzi later guided police officers to the gang’s alleged hideout in Kigombya Cell, where investigators established that members reportedly spent their days before emerging at night to carry out robberies across Mukono Municipality and surrounding areas.

At the hideout, police arrested Mubiru David, alias City, aged 20; Kizito Solomon, alias Kitama, aged 18; Ssemanda Junior, alias Kamese, aged 17; Muyomba Paul, alias Matama, aged 17; and Okumu Mark, alias Sekere, aged 18.

Police said the suspects admitted to participating in numerous robberies and reportedly told investigators they had lost count of the number of victims they had attacked.

A subsequent search of the premises led to the recovery of several exhibits, including knives, heavy-duty door cutters, wristwatches, SIM cards, suspected opium, counterfeit currency notes and other items believed to have been used in criminal activities.

Further investigations later resulted in the arrest of the gang’s alleged ringleader, Lubanga Brian, commonly known as “2PAC”.

SP Kawala said investigations remain ongoing as police work to identify and arrest additional members believed to be linked to the criminal network. “The operation remains ongoing as efforts continue to trace and apprehend other members of the criminal network,” she said.

The arrests come at a time when security agencies are intensifying operations against organised criminal gangs operating in urban centres across the country.

According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2025, police registered 2,807 aggravated robbery cases across the country, up from 2,732 cases recorded in 2024, reflecting a continued threat posed by violent criminal groups.

The crime report further indicates that many of the attacks were carried out by organised gangs targeting pedestrians, motorists and residents, particularly during night hours in urban and peri-urban areas.

Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant, avoid isolated routes at night where possible and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies as efforts to combat violent crime continue.
