Luwero, Uganda: What started as a modest wealth creation gift of two goats under the Office of the National Chairman (ONC) Empowerment Programme has blossomed into a thriving livestock enterprise for Mr. Sula Kanyike, a farmer from Kigoloba Village in Lutembe Parish, Katikamu Sub-county, Luwero District.

The remarkable transformation came to light during a monitoring visit on Tuesday, June 16, by ONC Manager Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, who continues to traverse the country assessing the impact of President Museveni’s wealth creation initiatives on beneficiary households.

Mr. Kanyike was among the beneficiaries who received a starter pair of goats, one male and one female, through the ONC Empowerment Programme in Luwero, 2023, an initiative that targeted vulnerable households to transition them from subsistence living into the money economy.

Today, the project has expanded from two goats to a herd of 20, creating a sustainable source of income and improving the family’s livelihood.

Speaking during the monitoring exercise, Mr. Kanyike credited the success to proper animal husbandry, commitment and the support extended through the government empowerment programme.

“I received only two goats, one male and one female, but through proper management and hard work, the number has grown to 20. The project has changed my life and given me a reliable source of income,” he said.

He added that the livestock enterprise has enabled him to diversify his farming activities while creating employment opportunities within the community.

“The goats provide manure, which I use in my coffee and banana plantations. This has improved soil fertility and increased productivity on my farm. The project is supporting my family in many ways,” Mr. Kanyike noted.

The farmer revealed that he currently employs one full-time worker to assist with managing the livestock enterprise and other farm activities.

Beneficiary Praises Namyalo’s Efforts

Mr. Kanyike also applauded Hajjat Namyalo for maintaining close contact with beneficiaries through regular field monitoring visits. He said the follow-up exercises encourage beneficiaries to remain focused and accountable while ensuring that government support is put to productive use.

“We are always encouraged when Hajjat Namyalo comes to monitor our projects. It shows that government is interested in our progress and motivates us to work even harder,” he said.

Mr. Kanyike further thanked President Museveni for championing empowerment programmes that are directly transforming lives at the grassroots. “I thank President Museveni for thinking about ordinary Ugandans like us. The support we received has helped us move forward and improve our standards of living,” he added.

Namyalo Hails Model Beneficiary

Speaking at his farm, Hajjat Namyalo commended Mr. Kanyike for demonstrating what can be achieved when beneficiaries embrace hard work, discipline and proper management of government support.

She described his progress as a shining example of the success that the ONC Empowerment Programme seeks to replicate across the country.

“This is exactly what President Museveni envisioned when he introduced wealth creation programmes. We are seeing a beneficiary who started with only two goats and has now built a sustainable enterprise that supports his family and creates employment,” Namyalo said.

The Chief Muzzukulu noted that monitoring exercises are intended not only to assess progress but also to identify success stories that can inspire other beneficiaries to utilize government support effectively.

“Mr. Kanyike’s story demonstrates that poverty can be defeated when people embrace the opportunities provided by government programmes and manage them responsibly,” she added.

Wealth Creation at the Grassroots

The ONC Empowerment Programme forms part of broader government efforts aimed at accelerating household income generation, fighting poverty and integrating more Ugandans into the money economy.

Under the initiative, beneficiaries receive startup support in various enterprises, including livestock, poultry, agriculture, and small-scale businesses, accompanied by continuous monitoring and guidance.

For Mr. Kanyike, the journey from two goats to 20 represents more than livestock multiplication. It is a testament to how targeted empowerment, coupled with hard work and determination, can transform livelihoods and create lasting socio-economic change.

As Hajjat Namyalo continues monitoring projects across the country, ONC officials say stories such as Kanyike’s provide tangible evidence of the impact of President Museveni’s wealth creation agenda on ordinary Ugandan households.
