Wakiso, Uganda: Police have launched investigations into a violent robbery incident in Kyengera Town Council after a video showing a group of men assaulting an individual with pangas circulated widely on social media.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala, the incident occurred in the early hours of June 15, 2026, in Kigwanya Zone, Nabbingo Parish, Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District.
“Our attention has been drawn to a video circulating on social media depicting a group of men assaulting an individual using pangas,” Kawala said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Police said the victim was attacked at approximately 2:00 a.m. while returning home from work in the company of his girlfriend.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the couple was heading to their residence in Kigwanya Zone when they were confronted by a gang of about seven armed men.
The attackers, who were reportedly armed with pangas, assaulted the victim before robbing him of his belongings and fleeing the scene. “The assailants reportedly robbed the victim of his belongings before fleeing the scene,” Kawala stated.
The disturbing video, which has been circulating on various social media platforms, sparked concern among members of the public and renewed debate about violent crime and public safety in parts of Wakiso District.
Kawala says the police at Nsangi Division have since taken over investigations and deployed a task team to identify and apprehend those responsible.
She said efforts are underway to establish the identities of the suspects and bring them before the courts of law. “Our task team is making every effort to identify, trace, and apprehend the suspects so they can be brought to justice.”
The police spokesperson urged members of the public who may have information regarding the attack or the suspects involved to cooperate with investigators.
The incident adds to growing concerns over violent robberies involving panga-wielding gangs in parts of Wakiso and the greater Kampala metropolitan area.
Security agencies have in recent years intensified operations against criminal gangs accused of targeting pedestrians, motorists, and residents during late-night and early-morning hours.
Police have repeatedly advised members of the public to remain vigilant, avoid isolated routes at night where possible, and promptly report suspicious individuals or criminal activities.
