Kampala, Uganda: Police in Nateete have arrested two suspects after a sniffer dog tracked a scent from a house break-in scene to a residence where a stolen television set was recovered just hours after the theft.
The suspects, identified as Sseguya Mike and Lukyamuzi Godfrey, are being held in connection with a case of house breaking and theft involving a television set, laptop and cash.
According to police, the incident occurred earlier on Friday when the complainant left her residence for work and returned at around 6:00 p.m. only to discover that unknown individuals had broken into her house through the bedroom section.
The suspects allegedly made away with a television set, a laptop computer and an unspecified amount of money.
The victim immediately reported the matter to Wamala Police Station, where a case was registered and officers sought assistance from the K9 unit attached to Nateete Police Station.
Police officers, accompanied by K9 handlers, responded to the scene and introduced a police sniffer dog identified as Bruce to help track down the suspects.
According to the police statement, Bruce successfully picked up a scent believed to have been left behind by the perpetrators and followed it to a perimeter wall.
Investigators observed clear footprints at the wall, which they believe was used as an escape route by the suspects.
The dog was subsequently reintroduced on the opposite side of the wall and continued tracking until it led officers to a house occupied by Lukyamuzi and Sseguya. “Bruce indicated by sitting at the entrance of the house,” police said.
A search was conducted at the premises, leading to the recovery of the stolen television set.
Police said the complainant positively identified the recovered television as part of the property stolen from her residence.
The two suspects were immediately arrested and are currently detained as investigations continue.
Police say detectives are also examining whether the suspects could be linked to other cases of house breaking and robbery reported within Nateete and surrounding areas.
The recovery has once again highlighted the growing role of K9 units in supporting criminal investigations and tracing suspects involved in theft-related crimes across the Kampala Metropolitan area.
