Archbishop Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu speaks ahead of the International Widows Day celebrations, calling for stronger protection of widows' property and inheritance rights.

Kampala, Uganda: The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, has called for stronger protection of widows’ property and inheritance rights, warning that many women continue to suffer dispossession and injustice following the death of their spouses.

The Archbishop made the appeal ahead of the Church of Uganda’s commemoration of International Widows Day, which will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the Lango Diocesan Office Grounds in Lira City under the theme, “Justice, Dignity and Economic Empowerment for Widows” (Isaiah 1:17).

Speaking during a media interview on Monday, Archbishop Kaziimba expressed concern over the continued mistreatment of widows and orphans, saying many are denied access to property they helped acquire during marriage.

“The widows and orphans are, in many cases, neglected, forgotten, and denied access to property rightfully belonging to them after the death of their husbands or fathers. This injustice continues to undermine the dignity of women who laboured alongside their spouses to build families, only to be dispossessed after their passing,” Archbishop Kaziimba said.

He said the Church remains committed to advocating for justice, dignity and economic empowerment for widows, while urging all stakeholders to play their part in protecting vulnerable members of society.

“We are reaffirming our commitment to promoting justice, restoring dignity, and advancing the economic empowerment of widows. I call upon all churches, families, cultural institutions, and government agencies to stand with widows and ensure they are treated with dignity, compassion, and fairness,” he added.

The Archbishop also urged judicial officers to prioritize cases involving widows, particularly those related to inheritance and property disputes, to ensure timely and fair justice.

This year’s provincial celebrations will be attended by Government Chief Whip Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng as Chief Guest, while Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Enid Origumisiriza will deliver the keynote address. The Bishop of Lango Diocese, Rt. Rev. Prof. Alfred Olwa, will be the main celebrant.

The event has been organized by the Church of Uganda Mothers’ Union in partnership with Redeem International.

Provincial Mothers’ Union President Mrs. Grace Murengezi will lead a delegation of Mothers’ Union leaders from across the province to participate in the celebrations.
