Kamuli residents give up land to pave way for community access road

Mayor Balinango commended the residents for putting community development ahead of personal interests, noting that the new road will significantly improve movement of people, goods and services between the two areas.

Kamuli, Uganda: Residents of Nankulyaku Ward in Southern Division, Kamuli Municipality, have voluntarily surrendered portions of their land to pave the way for the opening of a new road connecting the neighbouring communities of Nankulyaku and Bulongo, ending years of transport and accessibility challenges.

The agreement was reached during a community engagement meeting held on Sunday and attended by political leaders, technical officers, and local residents.

Among those present were Kamuli Municipality Mayor Fred Balinango, Deputy Mayor Juliet Birungi, Municipal Speaker Alex Kaima, Municipal Engineer Shadrac Mwalye, and Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC) Michael Museebe.

Mayor Balinango commended the residents for putting community development ahead of personal interests, noting that the new road will significantly improve movement of people, goods, and services between the two areas.

“We thank the people of Nankulyaku Ward for giving out their land voluntarily. This shows patriotism. This road is for all of us, and government will ensure it is worked on to standard so that farmers and traders benefit,” Balinango said.

Assistant RDC Michael Museebe praised the residents for embracing development and avoiding land disputes that often delay government projects.

“When people voluntarily give land for development, projects move faster. I applaud this community for setting an example. Government will not forget your sacrifice,” Museebe said.

Municipal Engineer Shadrac Mwalye assured residents that technical works would commence without delay, beginning with surveys and road design.

“We have listened to your concerns. The technical team will now move on-site to open the road and ensure proper drainage and culverts are put in place,” Mwalye explained.

He further assured residents that any applicable compensation procedures would be followed in accordance with the law and that the project would be implemented to the required standards.

Residents welcomed the development, saying the road would improve connectivity, lower transport costs, and enhance access to schools, markets, and other essential services.

“We have been suffering to access the other side, especially during the rainy season. Now our children can reach school easily, and we can take our produce to market,” one resident said.

Another community member noted that the decision to give up land was motivated by the anticipated benefits the road will bring. “We gave land willingly because we know this road will change our lives. We only ask government to work on it quickly,” the resident added.

Municipal leaders pledged to keep residents informed throughout the implementation process and ensure the road achieves its intended purpose of improving connectivity and supporting socio-economic development in the area.
