Kampala City, Uganda: Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested a 36-year-old man on charges of unlawful possession of suspected government stores following an intelligence-led operation in Kawempe Division.

The suspect, Prosper Turinawe, a driver attached to a private security company and a resident of Kyebando Central, was arrested on June 21, 2026, after police received information about a man allegedly seen carrying a pistol along Mawanda Road.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, officers attached to Wandegeya Police Station mounted an operation and established that the suspect had been staying at a lodge in the area.

Police said Turinawe initially evaded arrest, but further intelligence led to his interception at around 6:00 a.m. while allegedly in possession of 13 rounds of ammunition.

A subsequent search at his residence in Kyebando Central resulted in the recovery of approximately 40 spent cartridges of different calibres, black military-style boots, uniforms belonging to a private security company, and other uniforms from different organisations.

The recovered items were exhibited as evidence as investigators commenced inquiries into their origin.

Police have since charged the suspect with possession of government stores and are holding him in custody pending further investigations.

Preliminary findings indicate that the premises occupied by the suspect may have been used to store the recovered items.

Investigators are also working to establish the source of the exhibits and trace a firearm believed to be linked to the case but which remains unaccounted for.

Police said the suspect will be produced before court upon completion of investigations.

Kampala Metropolitan Police has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, activities or items to the nearest police station to support crime prevention efforts.
