Los Angeles, United States: South Africa made history on Thursday morning after defeating South Korea 1-0 to qualify for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time ever, while Brazil and Morocco also booked their places in the Round of 32.
Bafana Bafana entered their final Group A fixture knowing only victory would guarantee progression and delivered when it mattered most.
Thapelo Maseko emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 63rd minute to secure a famous victory that sent South Africa into the knockout rounds as group runners-up behind Mexico.
The breakthrough came after substitute Tshepang Moremi produced a perfectly weighted pass that released Maseko, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner beyond the South Korean goalkeeper.
South Africa then produced a disciplined defensive performance, marshalled by captain Ronwen Williams, to preserve their lead and secure one of the biggest results in the country’s football history.
The victory finally ended decades of World Cup disappointment and saw Belgian coach Hugo Broos become the first manager to guide South Africa beyond the group stage of the global showpiece.
Bafana Bafana finished second in Group A with four points and will now face Canada in the Round of 32.
Mexico Complete Perfect Group Campaign
Already assured of qualification, Mexico rounded off a flawless group-stage campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Czechia.
Mateo Chavez, Julian Quinones and Alvaro Fidalgo all found the net in the second half as the co-hosts maintained their 100 percent record.
Mexico finished top of Group A with nine points from three matches and remarkably did not concede a single goal during the group phase.
South Korea ended third with three points while Czechia exited the tournament with just one point.
Brazil Finish Top as Neymar Returns
In Group C, five-time world champions Brazil underlined their title credentials with a convincing 3-0 victory over Scotland at Miami Stadium.
Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior continued his impressive tournament form by scoring twice, taking his tally to four goals in the competition.
Matheus Cunha added the third goal as Brazil secured another dominant victory to finish top of the group on goal difference.
The match also marked an emotional milestone for Brazilian football as Neymar made his first appearance for the national team in more than three years after a lengthy injury layoff.
His return was warmly received by supporters and provided an additional boost for a Brazilian side increasingly being tipped among the tournament favourites.
Scotland finished third with three points and must now await confirmation on whether their tally will be enough to secure qualification among the best third-placed teams.
Morocco Complete Dramatic Comeback
Morocco joined Brazil in the knockout stage after producing a spirited comeback to defeat Haiti 4-2. The Atlas Lions twice came from behind in an entertaining contest.
Haiti stunned Morocco when Lenny Joseph opened the scoring before captain Achraf Hakimi restored parity.
Wilson Isidor then put Haiti ahead again, but Ismael Saibari equalised before halftime to leave the teams level at 2-2.
Morocco dominated the second half and eventually secured victory through goals from Soufiane Rahimi and Gessime Yassine.
The result ensured Morocco progressed alongside Brazil, with both nations finishing on seven points. Brazil claimed top spot courtesy of a superior goal difference.
