Vancouver, Canada: Switzerland secured top spot in Group B at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating co-hosts Canada 2-1 on Tuesday, while the hosts also advanced to the Round of 32 as group runners-up, the first time ever in the nation’s history to make it out of the group stage.
The Swiss finished the group stage unbeaten on seven points, while Canada edged Bosnia and Herzegovina to second place on goal difference after both nations ended with four points.
After a cagey first half ended goalless, Switzerland took control immediately after the restart.
Rubén Vargas broke the deadlock less than a minute into the second half after finding space inside the penalty area. The winger calmly controlled the ball before firing past Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau to give Switzerland the lead.
The Europeans doubled their advantage in the 57th minute through Johan Manzambi. Breel Embolo displayed excellent hold-up play inside the box before laying the ball into the path of the unmarked forward, who made no mistake in scoring his third goal of the tournament.
Facing elimination, Canada pushed forward in search of a response and were rewarded late in the contest.
Substitute Promise David scored with his first touch after coming off the bench, setting up a tense finish in front of the home crowd. However, the Canadians could not find an equaliser despite sustained pressure in the closing minutes.
The victory ensures Switzerland remain in Vancouver for their Round of 32 fixture on July 2, while Canada travel to Los Angeles for a knockout clash against the second-placed team from Group A.
In the other Group B encounter, Bosnia and Herzegovina kept their qualification hopes alive with an impressive 3-1 victory over Qatar.
Kerim Alajbegović opened the scoring with a brilliant solo effort before Bosnia extended their advantage through an own goal. Ermin Mahmić later added a third to complete the victory.
Despite finishing level on four points with Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina were denied automatic qualification on goal difference and had to settle for third place.
The Bosnians now await confirmation on whether their tally will be enough to secure progression as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Qatar finished bottom of the group with one point and exited the tournament without registering a victory.
