Man, 27, arrested over viral video glorifying criminal activities on Jinja road

The suspect, identified as Wafula Solomon, was arrested on Thursday afternoon by officers attached to Banda Police Post following the circulation of the video on various social media platforms, including X.

Wafula Solomon was arrested by officers from Banda Police Post after a viral video allegedly referenced criminal activities along Jinja Road and in Banda.

Kampala City, Uganda: Police in Kampala have arrested a 27-year-old man over a viral social media video in which he allegedly made references to criminal activities along Jinja Road and in Banda, Nakawa Division.

The suspect, identified as Wafula Solomon, was arrested on Thursday afternoon by officers attached to Banda Police Post following the circulation of the video on various social media platforms, including X.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the arrest was carried out at around midday as investigators moved to establish the circumstances under which the video was recorded and whether the statements made in it were linked to actual criminal activities.

Police identified the suspect as a resident of Banda Zone III, Banda Parish in Nakawa Division.

“On 25 June 2026 at about 12:00 noon, officers from Banda Police Post arrested a suspect in connection with a viral video circulating on social media, including on X, in which the individual appeared to make references to criminal activities allegedly taking place along Jinja Road and within Banda,” Owoyesigyire said.

Police said detectives are currently reviewing the contents of the video and examining whether the suspect or any of the individuals mentioned in the footage may be connected to criminal incidents reported along Jinja Road and surrounding areas.

The investigation is also expected to establish the identities of other persons referenced in the recording and determine whether they have any links to organised criminal activity.

Public warned

As investigations continue, police have cautioned members of the public against creating or distributing content that appears to celebrate, encourage or glorify crime.

Authorities warned that such content can undermine ongoing security operations and public efforts aimed at preventing criminal activity.

“Police would like to caution members of the public against producing, sharing, or circulating content that glorifies, promotes, or appears to endorse criminal activity. Such conduct is not tolerated and may undermine ongoing efforts to combat crime and maintain public order,” Owoyesigyire said.

The warning comes amid increasing police monitoring of social media platforms where videos, livestreams and online content are often used to publicise alleged criminal conduct or threaten members of the public.

Police said inquiries remain active and that further arrests could follow depending on the outcome of investigations.

Detectives are expected to analyze the contents of the video, interview relevant witnesses and verify claims made by the suspect.

“Investigations are ongoing to establish the identities and criminal involvement of the persons referenced in the video. Appropriate action will be taken against anyone found to have participated in criminal activities,” Owoyesigyire added.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.

The arrest forms part of broader efforts by Kampala Metropolitan Police to curb criminal activity and enhance security along major transport corridors and urban centres within the city.
