Los Angeles, USA: Canada booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in history after Stephen Eustáquio struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner to seal a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa in the opening Round of 32 match on Sunday.

The tightly contested encounter at Los Angeles Stadium appeared destined for extra time until the 92nd minute, when the Canadian midfielder unleashed a superb low strike from outside the penalty area that beat goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and sparked wild celebrations among the travelling supporters.

Canada controlled possession for much of the contest but found South Africa difficult to break down as Hugo Broos’ side defended resolutely in their first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout match.

Jonathan David, Tajon Buchanan, and Tani Oluwaseyi all threatened for the North Americans during the first half, while Derek Cornelius came close from a Stephen Eustáquio free-kick, only to be denied by Williams.

South Africa remained dangerous on the counterattack, with Evidence Makgopa and Oswin Appollis forcing Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau into important saves, but Bafana Bafana struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in the final third.

As the match headed towards extra time, Canada continued to press and finally found the breakthrough. Following a headed clearance on the edge of the box, Eustáquio reacted quickest before firing an unstoppable left-footed effort into the bottom corner to send the co-hosts into the last 16.

The goal carried added emotional significance for the Canadian midfielder, who has endured personal tragedy in recent months after losing both parents. His match-winning strike completed one of the most memorable moments in Canada’s football history.

For South Africa, the defeat ends a memorable campaign that saw Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stage for the first time. After progressing from Group A, Hugo Broos’ men produced a disciplined performance but were ultimately undone by a moment of brilliance in stoppage time.
