Houston, USA: Gabriel Martinelli scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Brazil fought back from a goal down to defeat Japan 2-1 and secure their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Arsenal winger struck in the sixth minute of added time to break Japanese hearts after the five-time world champions had dominated much of the second half in Houston.
Japan stunned the pre-match favourites by taking the lead in the 29th minute. Kaishu Sano capitalised on a misplaced pass in Brazil’s midfield before drilling a low effort beyond goalkeeper Alisson Becker to give the Samurai Blue a deserved advantage.
The Asian side defended with discipline for the remainder of the first half, frustrating Brazil with a compact backline and denying Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo and Bruno Guimarães clear scoring opportunities.
Brazil emerged after the restart with renewed urgency and almost found an equaliser through Guimarães before veteran midfielder Casemiro restored parity in the 56th minute.
The Manchester United midfielder rose highest to power home Gabriel Magalhães’ cross, sparking relentless Brazilian pressure.
Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo and substitute Endrick all threatened as Japan were pushed deeper into their own half while goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced a series of important saves to keep the scores level.
With extra time looming, Martinelli delivered the decisive moment.
Deep into stoppage time, the Arsenal forward latched onto a loose ball inside the penalty area before calmly slotting past Suzuki to complete Brazil’s comeback and send the South American giants into the last 16.
The victory keeps Brazil’s quest for a record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup title alive.
Dorival Júnior’s side will now face the winner of Tuesday’s Round of 32 clash between Norway and Ivory Coast for a place in the quarter-finals.
Japan, who had impressed throughout the group stage, bow out after producing a spirited performance that came within moments of forcing extra time against one of the tournament favourites.
