Boda-boda rider dies after crashing into stationary truck in Budaka

The crash occurred at around 11:30 p.m. on June 30, 2026, involving a white Tata truck, registration number UBM 239G, and a red Haojue motorcycle, registration number UGH 061Z.

Budaka, Uganda: A 25-year-old boda-boda rider was killed while his passenger sustained serious injuries after their motorcycle crashed into a stationary truck at Lupada Trading Centre along the Mbale–Tirinyi Road in Budaka District on Tuesday night.

The deceased has been identified as William Meke, a resident of Naboa Village in Naboa Town Council, Budaka District. The injured passenger, whose identity had not been established by press time, was rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.

According to police, the crash occurred at around 11:30 p.m. on June 30, 2026, and involved a white Tata truck, registration number UBM 239G, and a red Haojue motorcycle, registration number UGH 061Z.

Bukedi North Regional Police spokesperson ASP Wilfred Kyempasa said preliminary investigations indicate that the truck had developed a mechanical fault and had been parked on the left side of the road for traffic heading from Mbale.

Police said the vehicle had been marked with warning signs made of tree branches placed behind it.

“It is alleged that the motorcycle rider was travelling from Mbale towards Budaka when he crashed into the rear right side of the stationary truck, dying instantly,” Kyempasa said.

Police officers visited and documented the scene before transporting Meke’s body to Budaka Health Centre IV Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

The damaged motorcycle was towed to Budaka Central Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles.

Kyempasa said the truck driver was still at large as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.

The force has urged motorists and motorcycle riders to exercise extra caution while travelling at night and advised drivers of broken-down vehicles to ensure they are properly secured and adequately marked to alert other road users.
