Acting Foreign Affairs Minister Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo (R) interacts with South Africa's Charge d'Affaires, Kagiso Mosoane (L), on the safety and welfare of Ugandan nationals living in South Africa.

Kampala, Uganda: The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Regional Affairs), who is also Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, on Wednesday held talks with South Africa’s Charge d’Affaires to Uganda, Kagiso Mosoane, as the government continues efforts to safeguard Ugandan nationals living in South Africa.

The meeting comes at a time when Uganda is coordinating the voluntary repatriation of citizens wishing to return home from South Africa following recent security concerns affecting sections of the Ugandan community.

In a statement issued through his official X handle after the meeting, Hon Kasolo said the discussions focused on the welfare and safety of Ugandans living in South Africa, as well as strengthening diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.

“I was pleased to receive Mr. Kagiso Mosoane, the Charge d’Affaires of the Republic of South Africa to Uganda, for a courtesy call at my office today.”

The minister said both sides reviewed the evolving situation involving Ugandan nationals and reaffirmed the need for continued diplomatic engagement to address issues affecting citizens.

“Our discussions focused on the evolving situation concerning Ugandan nationals in South Africa and the ongoing efforts to ensure their safety and well-being. We reaffirmed the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement, close cooperation and constructive dialogue in addressing matters of mutual concern.”

The meeting follows the government’s announcement that it is facilitating the voluntary evacuation of Ugandans from South Africa, with nearly 1,200 citizens having registered for repatriation.

Hon Kasolo yesterday (Tuesday) confirmed that the first chartered evacuation flight is expected to transport the initial group of returnees back to Uganda at no cost to the beneficiaries.

The Minister reiterated Uganda’s commitment to maintaining strong bilateral relations with South Africa while ensuring the protection of its citizens abroad.

“Uganda remains committed to working closely with the Government of South Africa to safeguard the interests of our citizens while further strengthening the longstanding bonds of friendship and cooperation between our two sister nations.”

The Ugandan government has maintained that the ongoing engagement with South African authorities is aimed at ensuring that affected Ugandan nationals receive the necessary support while preserving the strong diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.
