Kampala, Uganda: The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has intensified efforts to strengthen women’s participation in elective politics, with the party’s National Treasurer, Amb. Barbara Nekesa Oundo, and Director of Mobilisation, Dr. Rosemary Nansubuga Seninde, leading a high-level strategy meeting to prepare female leaders for the forthcoming elections.

Held at the NRM headquarters on Plot 10, Kyadondo Road in Kampala, the meeting brought together aspiring and serving women leaders from across the country for discussions on leadership development, campaign preparedness and effective participation in Uganda’s electoral process.

Addressing participants, Amb. Nekesa reaffirmed the party’s commitment to promoting inclusive leadership and empowering women to take on greater political responsibility.

“Women are the backbone of our communities and our movement. This meeting is about equipping them with the tools, knowledge and confidence they need to contest and win positions at all levels,” she said.

Dr. Seninde, a veteran mobiliser within the NRM, emphasized the importance of early preparation and grassroots engagement, urging aspiring leaders to build strong relationships within their communities and run issue-based campaigns.

She also encouraged participants to embrace digital communication platforms as an effective tool for voter engagement while maintaining close interaction with local communities.

The strategy session featured presentations on electoral laws and nomination procedures, campaign resource mobilisation, public speaking, media engagement and constituency organisation.

Participants also discussed challenges commonly faced by women in politics, including financial limitations, cultural stereotypes and barriers to political participation, while exploring practical approaches to overcoming them.

Party officials said the initiative is intended to nurture a new generation of confident and competent women leaders capable of contributing meaningfully to national development and strengthening the NRM’s grassroots structures ahead of the elections.

Several participants described the meeting as timely and impactful, saying it had provided practical guidance on campaign planning, leadership and navigating Uganda’s political environment.

The NRM leadership indicated that similar capacity-building engagements will continue across the country as part of the party’s preparations for the forthcoming elections.
