ASP Owoyesigyire said the incident happened on Thursday, March 10 when Nasaka was called by the husband to pick her clothes from Kyebando Erisa, a Kampala suburb.

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police in Kampala has confirmed the arrest of a man who was captured on a phone camera battering his own wife after a video recording of the incident went viral on social media.

Police identified the husband in the video as Julius Matovu, 32, a resident of Fort Portal City whereas the victim is Esther Nasaka, 22, a resident of Kikubbamba Zone in Wakiso District.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan deputy Police Spokesperson said the incident happened on Thursday, March 10, 2022, when Nasaka was called by the husband to pick her clothes from Kyebando Erisa, a Kampala suburb.

“The horrific incident happened on March 10, 2022 when Nasaka was called by the husband to come pick her clothes from Kyebando Erisa opposite Hormisdallen Nursery and Primary School. The couple picked a quarrel and the woman was then assaulted by the man,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.

In the video, which has since attracted condemnation from several social media users, Matovu is seen violently pulling his wife’s hair before he strikes her to the ground with fists and kicks. The man who captured the 30 secs video is heard crying and pleading with Matovu to stop assaulting the woman before he was instructed to stop recording.

Owoyesigyire confirmed Matovu’s arrest and said he is currently detained at Kanyanya Police Station pending to appear in court over charges of assault and domestic violence.

“He (Matovu) is currently detained at Kanyanya police station and will be arraigned in courts of law as soon as investigations are complete,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.

The Uganda Police Annual Crime report of 2020 showcased a concern over the increase of domestic violence cases with 17,664 cases of domestic violence reported to 13,693 in 2019.
