IGANGA, UGANDA: The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Iganga district, Mr. Andrew Ntange has commended Lubega Institute of Nursing and Medical Sciences for giving holistic education to all students saying that their bodies are developed by the three acceptable domains contributes to a healthy person.
The institute which is under the proprietorship of Busoga’s first deputy premier Prof Dr Muhammad Lubega Kisambira comprises of four houses; Luwangula House, Mwiru House, Otana House and Nakisige House. Students at the gala participated in activities such as football, netball, volleyball, rope pulling, Santurce game, among others.
Mr Ntange was on Wednesday, May 25, attending inter-house co-curricular competitions at the institute were winners were awarded after involving in different games. Mr Ntange was the chief guest at the function which took place at the Institute’s playground at Buseyi village, Nakalama sub-county in Iganga district.
“This shows that this school is giving holistic education or the desired education involving the three domains of learning. Here we look at the brain, that is the cognitive domain, we also look at the heart, that is the affective domain and the body which includes the feet and hands, which is psychomotor,” he said.
The Deputy RDC says that by applying the three domains of learning, the nurses and midwives will be healthy and flexible in all other things.
“When teaching, the body need all the three domains so our nurses and midwives will be healthy and will be all round because it’s the most important thing,” Ntange emphasized.
Ntange also added that some schools have ignored various activities which include physical games, but instead deal only with brain work citing that the element of co-curricular activities lacks in many schools but it’s key for any learner.
“The element of co-curricular is lacking in many institutions and schools. You reach at a school where children no longer participate in making crafts, they have abandoned physical education (P.E), they are not going for games but just focusing on the head content. Those are the people you may find and wonder how they were brought up. For the body to be relieved and refreshed, all the domains must be functional,” Mr. Ntange said before urging parents to always spare time for their children to participate in some games since it helps in building knowledgeable citizens.
However, the principal of Lubega institute of nursing and health professionals, Mr Hanaba Benard said that they came up with such activities to refresh the students’ minds and have a break from classwork by building the body through physical activities.
“Because our students are taught a lot of technical work, we saw it necessary for them to refresh their minds that’s why we came up with these games for them to have time to relax from class as they build their body and minds through these games,” Mr. Hanaba said.
He also urged parents to trust them with their children citing that they give holistic education involving activities outside the classroom which are deemed important to students’ bodies.
“I urge parents that we pledged to serve you and produce good medical students. For us at Lubega Institute when you give us your children, they will leave the institute while equipped with knowledge of medical practice and come out there to serve diligently but this is realised by involving students in other co-curricular activities which build their body and minds,” he added.
Meanwhile, the sports master Lubega Institute of Nursing and Health Professionals, Magomu Peter said that four houses participated and the best house in every game was rewarded with a trophy and other prizes.
“We had football, netball, volleyball, rope pulling and other games. Mwiru house won the trophy in volleyball, Otana house won the trophy in football and in netball while other houses won in other games and also took the trophies,” Mr Magomu said before advising the teams which didn’t perform well to continue practicing and execute excellently in future tournaments.
Otana house, who was the overall winner moved away with a bull and all the teams which participated received cash envelopes from the institution director, Prof Dr Muhammad Lubega on top of other prizes.
Dr. Lubega says that this was a motivational tool to keep all participants active such that they continue involving in co curricular activities.
Lubega Institute has got a number of schools embedded, which includes Lubega Institute of Nursing and midwifery, Lubega Institute of nursing and health professionals, Lubega school of business, technical and vocational studies, among others.
