Accra, Ghana: Uganda’s U-15 girls’ football team kicked off their 2025 CAF Africa Schools Football Championship campaign with a stunning 1-0 win over titleholders South Africa in a tightly contested Group B match on Wednesday at the University of Ghana.
The match remained goalless in the first half despite end-to-end action. However, a second-half tactical substitution by Uganda’s head coach, Jimmy Kintu, changed the tide.
Forward Grace Kawiino, who replaced Annastanzia Mbeiza, found the net within a minute of stepping onto the pitch, scoring the decisive goal.
Led by Captain Lydia Namaseruka, the Ugandan side showed discipline and resilience to fend off a determined South African attack in the final stages, securing a historic victory in their opening fixture.
The girls return to action today, Thursday, April 24, at 1:00 PM against The Gambia, as they continue their quest in Group B, which also features DR Congo.
Meanwhile, Uganda’s U-15 boys’ team suffered a 2-0 defeat to hosts Ghana in their opener. The home side struck in the 3rd minute and sealed the result with a second-half goal.
The Ugandan boys will next face Algeria at 2:00 PM today, aiming for redemption in their second group match.
