Kampala, Uganda: The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has joined the global Catholic community in mourning the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, with Executive Director, Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki, describing him as “a transformative figure” whose legacy transcended borders and faith.
In a condolence letter dated April 23, 2025, addressed to His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, the Archbishop of Kampala Catholic Archdiocese, ED Buzeki extended heartfelt sympathies on behalf of KCCA and lauded Pope Francis for his life of humility, compassion, and unity.
“Pope Francis united people from all walks of life, constantly reminding the world of the importance of love and dignity for every individual,” Buzeki wrote, adding that the Pope’s leadership was “marked by humility, compassion, and the promotion of social cohesion.”
Ms Buzeki, accompanied by the Lord Mayor and other KCCA officials, on Wednesday visited Lubaga Cathedral to console the Archbishop, where she echoed the Authority’s support to the Catholic faithful during this difficult time.
“With a heavy heart, we are joining you in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis,” she said during the brief address to the media. “As we grieve this loss of such an extraordinary leader, we encourage you to reflect on the profound teachings and examples that have been set by him throughout his papacy.”

Buzeki praised the Catholic Church’s contribution to Kampala’s social fabric and reaffirmed KCCA’s partnership with the Church. “Your continued commitment to serve and uplift those around you is a clear testament to the legacy of Pope Francis,” she said.
The late Pontiff, who made a memorable pastoral visit to Uganda, is remembered for his profound engagement with African communities. “He was a leader whose unwavering commitment to peace, inclusivity, and compassion transcended borders and beliefs,” the Executive Director stated.
As part of the Authority’s support for the planned memorial Mass in Kampala, Ms Buzeki pledged logistical support, saying, “As Kampala Capital City Authority, we pledge to provide drinking water during the mass, which we will have.”
Pope Francis, revered for championing the cause of the poor, the environment, and interfaith dialogue, leaves behind a legacy that leaders across the world, including Uganda, continue to uphold.
