Ngora, Uganda: The 2025 USSSA National Boys Football Championship kicked off on Tuesday, May 6, in Ngora District with a total 64 schools from all over Uganda competing for the national title in the highly anticipated tournament. The teams arrived in Ngora on Monday, May 5, ahead of the group stage matches.
The schools were divided into 16 groups, each comprising four teams. Defending champions St Julian High School of Mukono are in Group A alongside Lake Side SS, Garama SS, and Labira SS. St Julian had a good beginning with a 3-1 win over Garama SS, a sign that they are ready to defend their title.
In Group I, tournament giants St Mary’s Boarding School Kitende are expected to make a strong push. They are grouped with Bugisu High School, Ssaku SS, and Notre Dame High School, who lost 1-2 to Bugisu in their opener. Kitende has plenty of history in school football and remains one of the favorites.
Title-defending runners-up, Amus College School, are in Group P with Luwero SS, Masindi SS, and Buziga Islamic School. Amus drew 1-1 with Masindi SS in their first game. Kibuli SS, another football powerhouse school, beat Green Light Islamic School 1-0 in their Group O match opener.
The other sides had mixed fortunes on day one. Bishop Angelo Negri beat Namagabi SS 2-0, while Mt Zion High edged out Lubiri SS by the same margin. Nyamitanga won 2-0 against Jinja Comprehensive School, and Standard High Zzana registered a narrow 1-0 win over Kichwamba High.
Wagwa High beat Nabumali High 2-0, while Mehat Lugazi thrashed Agape School 3-1. St Lawrence Crown City also made a statement with a 4-1 demolition of Moyo Star. Elsewhere, Busia SS also made an impression with a 3-0 victory over Chemwania High.
The group stages will take place throughout the week, with the top two schools from each group advancing to the knockout phases. The tournament will be concluded on May 15.
