Amolatar, Uganda: At least two fishermen have died after their boat capsized on Lake Kyoga following a violent storm near Kitaleba landing site in Muntu Sub-county, Amolatar District.
The incident occurred on Saturday, May 10, 2025, during a severe storm that struck as the victims were engaged in fishing activities.
The deceased have been identified as Emmanuel Obua, 22, from Alebtong District, and Alfred Osekeng, 37, from Alem Village in Kaberamaido District, who authorities say were using illegal fishing gear at the time of the accident.
North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, confirmed the incident during a press briefing on Monday and urged local fishermen to prioritize safety and compliance with fishing regulations.
“As police, we are aware that sometimes community members risk their lives to make ends meet. However, we want to warn and advise that fishermen must avoid using illegal landing sites and fishing gear or boats, which are not recommended by the Fisheries Protection Unit,” Okema stated.
According to police records, at least 47 fishermen have died in water accidents on Lake Kyoga since 2019, often linked to illegal fishing practices and poor weather preparedness.
