Kampala, Uganda: Uganda’s First Son and Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has asked for a public apology from the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) after its chairperson, Mariam Wangadya, last month ordered the release of detained National Unity Platform (NUP) security chief, Edward Ssebuufu alias Eddie Mutwe.
In a May 2nd letter addressed to Gen. Muhoozi, Ms Wangadya condemned Mutwe’s detention as unlawful and warned that continued incarceration could amount to contempt of the UHRC under Article 53(1)(d) of the Constitution.
Wangadya’s letter followed Gen. Muhoozi’s earlier post confirming that Eddie Mutwe was in military custody, and days later, after the letter, authorities produced Mutwe before the Masaka Grade One Magistrate, Abdullah Kayiza, under heavy security.
Mutwe, visibly weak and assisted by police to walk, was charged with robbery and aggravated robbery allegedly committed in Manja, Lwengo district. The charges mirror earlier ones faced by fellow NUP activists Acleo Kivumbi, Wasabi, and Gadaffi.
Responding to UHRC on Thursday, May 15, Gen Muhoozi released a strongly worded response via his official account on X (formerly Twitter), labelling the letter as “STUPID”, and emphasized that he expects an imminent apology from the commission.
“LOL! If these people value the lives we gave them, they MUST NEVER even think of sending me such a STUPID letter again! This is their last warning! I expect an apology,” Gen Muhoozi wrote.
In a separate post, Gen Muhoozi turned his criticism to the European Union, castigating the EU officials for engaging opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, over the state of Human Rights affairs in Uganda.
“This is an abomination! @EUinUG is really playing with fire. Sawa!” the CDF posted on X.
