Kampala, Uganda: The Territorial Police in Kampala have arrested 21 suspects, including two women, believed to be part of the criminal gang accused of carrying out a series of violent robberies and assaults that disrupted the city center on Saturday afternoon.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the gang targeted crowds converging around the National Theatre and UBC roundabout as thousands made their way to Kyadondo to witness President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s nomination as the NRM presidential flag bearer.

“The suspects were disguised in yellow T-shirts and targeted motorists, pedestrians, and businesspeople,” Onyango said in a Sunday police statement.

The coordinated attacks, according to Onyango, occurred around 2:00 pm, with victims reporting theft of phones, handbags, cash, and other valuables.

Police reviewed CCTV footage from the city’s camera network, which helped track the suspects to various hideouts. “The arrested individuals are currently being held at CPS Kampala and Wandegeya Police Station,” Onyango said.

Onyango clarified that one suspect sustained injuries while attempting to flee arrest and is under medical care, but confirmed no fatality despite some reports claiming one lady had died during the fracas.

Authorities confirmed that statements have been recorded from several victims, and case files are being compiled for prosecution. “We are still reviewing footage to identify more individuals who participated in these incidents,” Onyango added, urging any other victims who have not yet come forward to report immediately.

He noted that the suspects will face charges related to simple robbery and assault, and warned that operations to dismantle city gangs will continue.
