Kampala, Uganda: Ugandans working in the Capital of Kampala were left reeling with shock on Saturday after a brazen gang of youths dressed in yellow NRM T-shirts terrorised the streets in the city centre, attacking and robbing citizens in broad daylight as supporters of the ruling party made way to Kyadondo for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s 2026 nomination bid.

Viral videos that went viral over the weekend captured the moment dozens of young men swarmed the National Theatre and UBC roundabout areas, pouncing on pedestrians, snatching bags, and vandalising vehicles.

The chaos erupted shortly after Museveni, 80, picked nomination forms at the NRM party headquarters, marking his intention to extend his leadership to a seventh elective term in the 2026 elections.

According to eyewitnesses, the marauding group, described as a “flash mob,” donned in Museveni pro-T-shirts dragged a woman along the tarmac when she resisted, making off with her mobile phone and valuables.

In another clip, a man was cornered as the attackers chanted, “We are the Bazukulu, we shall teach you a lesson.”

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed on Sunday that 21 suspects, including two women, were arrested and are in custody at CPS Kampala and Wandegeya Police Station.

“Police in Kampala have arrested 21 suspects, including two females, in connection with a string of robberies and assaults that occurred on June 28, 2025, around 2:00 p.m., along the National Theatre and UBC roundabout area,” Onyango stated yesterday.

“The suspects, disguised in yellow T-shirts, targeted people heading to Kyadondo to witness the nomination of President Museveni, as well as motorists, businesspeople, and pedestrians,” he added.

The NRM Secretariat did not immediately release an official statement, but party spokesperson Emmanuel Dombo denied the attackers were their supporters, telling NTV Uganda on Sunday; “NRM is not known for operating gangs… They could have been sent to infiltrate our group with their criminal intentions.”

But the Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, whose supporters are in jail for leading processions with him on Ugandan streets, condemned the incident, accusing NRM operatives of deliberately unleashing chaos to intimidate political rivals and ordinary citizens.

“While they quickly abduct and arrest our supporters whenever they’re seen on the streets, these gangs have the liberty to roam our streets committing crimes under the protection of the military and police,” Kyagulanyi said.

This is not the first time processions linked to NRM events have descended into violence. In September 2023, criminals disguised in NRM regalia attacked participants celebrating Museveni’s birthday at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, where Japanese consultant Okira Ito was fatally assaulted.

Police investigations are ongoing as detectives pore over CCTV footage to identify additional suspects. Victims have been urged to report to CPS Kampala to record statements and aid prosecutions.
