Kamuli, Uganda: Newly elected councillors in Kamuli District have been warned against corruption, misuse of office, and seeking personal favours from district technical staff as they prepare to begin their leadership responsibilities.

The warning was issued by Kamuli Deputy Resident District Commissioner Mr Mafumo Adonia during a strategic meeting attended by councillors, heads of department, and NRM leaders at Bingo Arena in Bufumba, Kamuli Municipality.

“A councillor’s role is to oversee and make decisions for the benefit of the community, not to beg for personal gain,” Adonia told the leaders.

He urged councillors to prioritize transparency, accountability, and service delivery while working closely with the district technical team to drive development.

Adonia reminded the newly elected leaders that they are representatives of the people and should use their positions responsibly. “You are the voice of the people. Use it wisely,” he emphasized.

The meeting focused on helping councillors understand their roles and develop strategies for effective service delivery to their communities.

Kamuli District LCV-elect Kalori Dhizaala echoed the call for integrity, warning councillors against corruption and manipulation during the upcoming district speakership elections.

“Let’s choose leaders based on merit, not personal interests,” Dhizaala said.

Kamuli NRM Vice Chairperson Waiswa Nsogola also cautioned councillors against overreliance on district technical staff. “Be firm in your decisions and don’t be compromised,” Nsogola advised.

District leaders expressed hope that the newly elected councillors will uphold transparency and accountability as guiding principles throughout their term in office.
