Why Murchison Falls National Park is still Uganda’s wildlife crown jewel

As UWA intensifies conservation and tourism development efforts, officials say the iconic conservation area continues to offer one of Africa’s richest safari experiences.

Masindi, Uganda: The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has intensified conservation and tourism development efforts across Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest protected area, cementing its status as the country’s leading wildlife and safari destination.

Stretching across northwestern Uganda, the Murchison Falls Conservation Area remains one of Africa’s richest ecosystems, blending forests, savannah grasslands, wetlands, waterfalls and diverse wildlife habitats into a single tourism destination.

The expansive conservation landscape covers Murchison Falls National Park, Ajai Wildlife Reserve, East Madi Wildlife Reserve, Bugungu Wildlife Reserve and Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve, while government is now set to integrate Bugoma Forest into the wider conservation area after its official handover today (Saturday).

Speaking to DailyExpress during a visit to the park yesterday (Friday), the Chief Warden of the Murchison Falls Conservation Area, Mr Fred Kiiza, described the park as Uganda’s greatest wildlife treasure and one of the continent’s most complete ecosystems.

“Murchison Falls is the largest Uganda wildlife reserve estate in this country called Uganda,” Kiiza said. “It is the home of the waterfalls, the strongest waterfalls in Africa and in the world.”

Kiiza said Murchison Falls is one of the few destinations in East Africa where visitors can encounter the full “Big Five” experience, including lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards and rhinos.

The conservation area, according to the Chief Warden, hosts Uganda’s largest lion population, alongside thousands of giraffes, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles and bird species spread across its vast savannah plains and river systems.

“You think about a lion, you will definitely see it in Murchison Falls,” he noted. “If you want to see baby ones, you will see them. But also, if you want to see the real African man-eaters of lions, still you will find them at Murchison Falls.”

The park’s ecological diversity allows tourists to experience multiple ecosystems in a single journey, beginning with tropical forests around Masindi before gradually opening into the expansive savannah grasslands of northern Uganda.

The Mighty Waterfalls

At the centre of the park lies the iconic Murchison Falls where the River Nile violently squeezes through a narrow gorge before plunging down with explosive force.

The waterfalls continue attracting thousands of tourists annually and remain among Uganda’s most photographed natural attractions.
Boat cruises below the falls have equally become a major tourism highlight, giving visitors close-range encounters with wildlife gathering along the Nile banks.

UWA Intensifies Conservation Efforts

The Wildlife Authority has in recent years strengthened anti-poaching operations, wildlife monitoring, habitat restoration and ranger patrols within the Murchison Falls Conservation Area as part of broader efforts to protect biodiversity and sustain tourism growth.

Kiiza says the authority has also invested in tourism infrastructure, road network improvements and community conservation partnerships aimed at reducing human-wildlife conflict and promoting sustainable livelihoods around protected areas.

He says these efforts are critical in preserving Uganda’s ecological heritage while supporting tourism, which remains one of the country’s leading foreign exchange earners.

Beyond wildlife viewing, Murchison Falls offers cultural tourism, hiking experiences, birdwatching, sport fishing and scenic landscapes stretching from Karuma to Lake Albert.

Kiiza urges Ugandans to embrace domestic tourism and explore the country’s natural heritage. “I appeal to all Ugandans, start with coming to Murchison Falls,” he said. “It’s a pleasure because it’s the home of happiness.”
