Uganda, South Sudan renew commitment to regional cooperation

Uganda and South Sudan share close historical, political and economic ties, with Uganda remaining one of South Sudan’s largest trading partners and a key contributor to peacebuilding efforts in the world’s youngest nation.

Kampala, Uganda: Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo has reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic relations with South Sudan following a courtesy meeting with H.E. Amb. Paul Molong Akaro, South Sudan’s Ambassador to Uganda.

The meeting, held at the Ministry Headquarters this monring in Kampala, focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation and advancing shared regional priorities, including peace, stability and sustainable development.

Hon Kasolo said the discussions were cordial and constructive, reflecting the long-standing friendship between the two neighbouring countries.

“I had the pleasure of receiving H.E. Amb. Paul Molong Akaro, Ambassador of the Republic of South Sudan to Uganda, who paid a courtesy call at my office this morning,” Kasolo said.

“We held cordial and constructive discussions on matters of mutual interest, reaffirming the strong and enduring bilateral relations between Uganda and South Sudan. We also explored opportunities to further deepen cooperation in key areas that advance the shared aspirations of our two countries and contribute to regional peace, stability, and sustainable development.”

The two countries cooperate in sectors including trade, infrastructure development, security, education, health and regional integration under the framework of the East African Community (EAC), which South Sudan joined in 2016.

Uganda has also played a significant diplomatic role in supporting peace initiatives in South Sudan through the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)-led mediation process and continues to host hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese refugees.

Kasolo, who is also Minister of State for Regional Affairs, reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to working closely with Juba to strengthen bilateral cooperation and promote regional prosperity.

“Uganda remains committed to working closely with the Republic of South Sudan in the spirit of friendship, mutual respect, and regional solidarity,” he said.

The meeting comes as Uganda continues to deepen engagement with regional partners on issues of peace, economic integration and cross-border development, in line with the country’s foreign policy objectives.
