IGANGA, UGANDA; Police in Busoga East have launched investigations into the murder of two men who were lynched by a mob suspecting them of involvement in theft of livestock.

The two men according to Busoga East police spokesperson SP Diana Nandawula were killed by the mob on Sunday night at Bugabwe village, Nakigo Sub-county in Iganga district.

Police say that no one has since been arrested in connection with the unlawful act.
“At this moment, no one has been arrested in connection to this unlawful act of mob justice but the investigation to get the right information about this incident has commenced,” Ms. Nandawula said before adding that the bodies were on Monday morning picked by police and taken to Iganga general hospital mortuary at Nakavule for autopsy.

Nandawula rallied the general public to always refrain from acts of mob justice since it continues to cover-up other criminals.
“We continue to argue people that even though people have involved in criminality, it would be better to avoid mob justice because most of the time criminals have many gangs whom once arrested can help in investigations and conducting necessary arrests. But killing them, it just helps in covering up their fellow criminals in unlawful acts,” SP Nandawula urged.

According to the report released by Uganda police in 2020, a total of 540 cases of murder by mob action were reported compared to 746 cases reported in 2019, giving a decrease of 27.6%.

The report notes that victims of mob justice were mainly suspected to have committed offences that include theft, robbery, murder, witchcraft and burglary.

However, despite the drop in number of people killed by mob justice in 2020, this could be the reverse in 2022 after many people losing lives in a similar way.
